Guess Who? is the face-guessing deduction game most people first met as a plastic board with little flip-down windows. Each side has a grid of cartoon characters, a hidden mystery character is chosen for you, and the job is to work out who it is by asking questions that can only be answered yes or no. This version runs in the browser, so there is no board to set up and no pieces to lose.

It is an odd neighbour on a site built around falling-block puzzles, but it fits the same appetite: a short, quiet round where you are sorting information and narrowing a field until one answer is left. There is no reflex test here and no timer pressure you have to fight; a game is a handful of well-chosen questions.

How to play

The core idea of the classic game is elimination. You look at the grid of faces, pick a question about something visible, such as hair colour, glasses, a hat, a beard or a particular expression, and take the answer. If the answer is yes, every face without that trait can be crossed off. If it is no, every face with it goes. Keep going until one face remains, then make your guess. Guess early and wrong and you normally lose the round, so the tension is deciding when you are sure enough.

Controls in this build are point and click: you use the mouse or a tap on the screen rather than arrow keys. The start screen shows the options it offers, so check that before your first round, and click once inside the game frame so it receives your input.

Tips

  • Aim every question at splitting the remaining faces roughly in half. Asking about a trait that only one or two faces share rarely pays off; asking about one that half the board has removes about twelve candidates at a stroke.
  • Ask about one trait at a time. A question that bundles two features makes a "no" hard to read, because you cannot tell which half failed.
  • Re-scan the board after every answer. Players most often lose by leaving a face standing that an earlier answer should have removed.
  • Look for traits that are easy to misjudge, like light brown versus blond hair, and prefer cleaner features such as glasses or a hat when you can.

If you want another game about thinking rather than speed, Block Puzzle and 11-11 ask you to plan placements on a grid, and Tiles Master is a calm matching game. Sandtris and Tetris 99 are the opposite end of the shelf, where falling pieces keep the pressure on. Guess Who? sits comfortably between sessions of those, since a round takes only a few minutes.

It suits anyone who likes logic puzzles, and it is easy to hand to a younger player or someone who has never touched a puzzle game. It runs in the browser with nothing to install, on desktop or on a phone or tablet.
